Virtual Labs and Common Testbeds

WP2 PHASE NUMBER

Phase 1

(Virtual Laboratory and Common Testbeds)

EMANICS is creating a virtual laboratory and common testbeds for research and teaching purposes. This page explains who is involved and documents what we are doing.

Motivation

Research groups working on network management systems typically maintain local laboratories for experimentation and education. These labs (or testbeds) are usually limited in size and the degree of heterogeneity. Virtual laboratories seek to provide significantly more resources for research and education by integrating the various existing resources of the various partners. The virtual laboratories will enable joined research projects of partners focussing on common research questions.

Objectives

The concrete objectives of this activity are three-fold:

  • Integration of existing labs into virtual labs accessible to EMANICS members
  • Establishment of a collaboration environment to support the organization and operation of the virtual lab (in coordination with WP4)
  • Creation and maintenance of repositories of measurement data traces

Tasks

In order to achieve these objectives, the following tasks have been defined:

  • T2.1: Collaboration environment and Integration policies
    • Development of rules, procedures and tools that help to organize and operate a virtual network management laboratory
    • Electronic collaboration environment used to coordinate access to, usage and documentation of the virtual lab (complements the dissemination environment)
  • T2.2: Repositories
    • Provide a repository where measurement data and data traces can be maintained
    • Appropriate procedures for anonymization will be defined and applied or
    • A trusted party with exclusive access to the data traces will be put in charge to run data analysis software on data traces that cannot be shared among participants

Projects

Work is organized into four different projects:

  1. VoIP Management Testbed (VOIP)
  2. Network Management Trace Collection and Analysis (TRACE)
  3. Trace Collection for Network Replay (REPLAY)
  4. Resource Usage Data Collection (ABLOMERS)
For a more detailed description, see the deliverables.

Phase 2

(Virtual Laboratory and Common Testbeds)

Objectives

This work-package is part of the integration activity of the network. It has the following
objectives:
• Integration of existing laboratories into virtual laboratories and common testbeds
• Data collection (measurement traces) and maintenance of repositories
• Creation and maintenance of supporting infrastructure and tools

Description of work

Research groups working on network management systems maintain local laboratories for
experimentation and education. These labs (or testbeds) are usually limited in size and the
degree of heterogeneity. Virtual laboratories seek to provide significantly more resources for
research and education by integrating the various existing resources of the various partners.
The virtual laboratories will enable joint research projects of partners focusing on common
research questions.

T2.1: Development and Operation of Virtual Labs and Common Testbeds
The integration of the laboratories requires the development of suitable configurations,
integration rules, and procedures that help to organize and operate virtual laboratories and
common testbeds. In particular, rules are needed to harmonize/track the configuration of the
elements making up a virtual lab and to provide controlled secure access to the shared
infrastructure. Furthermore, maintenance actions are needed to maintain a virtual lab
infrastructure in a workable state, which includes regular software updates, updates to reflect
changes in the local environments, and installation support for new virtual labs or common
testbeds.

T2.2: Data Collection Activities and Maintenance of Repositories

One particular activity is the collection and maintenance of data for research purpose. Several
project partners have access to different kind of production networks which are a very valuable
source for obtaining traces from real-world networks to drive the verification of simulation
experiments and evaluation of new technologies in general. This task supports data collection
activities and in particular the additional efforts (anonymization, data format conversion,
execution of analysis programs) to share data sets within EMANICS.

T2.3: Development and Maintenance of Supporting Tools
To carry out the tasks T2.1 and T2.2, some supporting tools are needed. This task supports the
development and the maintenance of such tools. Since tool development and support may be
decoupled from the usage of the tools, this activity has been split out as a separate task.
Activities are funded on a nine months basis, following a selection process based on open calls,
which are open to all EMANICS partners. The selected projects have to report progress every
three months with a full reporting at the end of each nine months period. These reports will be
presented by the selected activities at work-package meetings.
Work-package membership implies regular involvement in the work-package activities and in
particular active contribution to the activities selection procedure, the editing of deliverables, and
the active participation in regular face-to-face meetings.
